GINGERBREAD VILLAGE

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

It seemed like a good idea while I was lying in bed one night. I was hosting Christmas and I would make a gingerbread village – a house for each of my family members. My bad luck that I’m the oldest of seven kids. I decided that my parents could share, so that was 8 houses, plus a mini one for Isabella. My projects can get a little ambitious just before I fall asleep. One more thing – I would make Mum and Dad a gingerbread version of their house, our childhood home.

I set about finding a few templates online, there is one on Good Food – the link to the template is at the bottom of the recipe, and there are also several here including a template for a church. I made up a few of them, it’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Mum and Dad’s was a bit more complicated, it took me a few days to draw out the template (definitely not to scale!).  I began to wonder about the wisdom of so much gingerbread.

I made a big batch of gingerbread. I cut out all the shapes for two houses, complete with windows. To make windows, put a clear boiled sweet (foxes glacier fruits are perfect) into the hole that you’ve made for the window before you put the shape in the oven. It will melt during cooking a make a lovely sweetie window. I was already sick of gingerbread. I soldiered on, and after about a week (and at least 6 double batches of gingerbread) had all the shapes.

You need real royal icing which sets hard to glue the pieces together – the type with egg whites (150 ml egg white, 1 kg icing sugar, tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix until smooth, and add water/more lemon juice if it’s too thick).

Enough waffling.  Here are the houses…

This is Mum and Dad’s.  I put little battery operated tealights inside all the houses so the windows glowed and flickered in the dark.

The tiny one with the path and log pile was Isaballa’s.  The other tiny one was Colin’s.  Can you tell I’d got fed up by then ;-)  The Christmas trees are cake pops!

The whole Honeywell village

This one was Lucy’s – she’s a student so the tiles are falling off the roof and it’s a bit of a mess. Very Lucy. Pretty but messy!

Lastly a santa hat cake pop. I started making cake pops last year after seeing Bakerella’s website and got slightly obsessed.

The last of the gingerbread has just been eaten. I think this year I might just make one house.

WINDERMERE LAKE DISTRICT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER | CLAIRE AND RYAN : MARRIED

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Claire and Ryan got married at the Low Wood Hotel in Windermere last May, on a blustery but sunny day (see evidence below!).  The wedding had a distinctly Audrey Hepburn feel, from the bridesmaids dresses and accessories, to the fantastic favours – a postbox red Chanel lipstick for each female guest.  One of my favourite favours yet!

Claire and Ryan are expecting their first baby next month, and I’m hoping to get to meet him/her sometime soon!

ALDWARK MANOR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY | JUDITH AND STEVEN

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

I present to you Steve and Jude’s lovely wedding at Aldwark Manor, which is just a couple of miles from my house.  Jude put in a lot of effort to pull off this stunning winter wedding in just a matter of weeks – it goes to show it can be done, it doesn’t have to take years to plan a wedding!

Judith got ready in a lovely light, posh suite overlooking the golf course:

Aldwark Church is very pretty and walking distance from Aldwark Manor, plus I know the vicar well, so all in all it’s a top church!

Judith works in jewellery – can you tell?!

The room was staged by Angel Events in Harrogate, and looked breathtaking.  A winter wonderland greeted the guests as they entered the wedding breakfast room, complete with real fir trees (if trees are good enough for Kate Middleton…)

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY THE STAR INN YORKSHIRE | CAROLINE AND ERIK

Friday, January 20th, 2012

After chatting to a bride to be this week about her wedding this year at The Star in North Yorkshire, I realised that Caroline and Erik’s wedding had never made it to the blog. What a travesty! Packed full of wonderful details, their intimate, stylish wedding should not be kept on a back up disk, and so here it is.

Caroline is a twin, she and her sister are very close and did each others make up on the wedding morning.

Handsome….

but still his usual self!  Erik was a great fun with a rather wicked sense of humour.

Just look at Caroline’s outfit.  Fab!

That dress was made for dancing.

Did I mention Erik was a little wicked?  Well he even had to have his own, colourful cake.  He didn’t fancy totally fitting in with Caroline’s careful colour scheme ;-)

That’s all folks.  I’m very glad I realised the error and got round to posting this wedding, it’s one of my favourites.

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER YORK | JENNY AND CHARLIE:ENGAGED

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Meeting Jenny was one proof that six degrees of separation do exist, or at least that some things must be meant to be. I was about to go on maternity leave when I fist got an email from her – she was currently living in London with her fiance Charlie and was trying to balance wedding planning with a hectic work schedule. I arranged to meet Jenny’s parents to chat about photography, and in doing so it transpired that I was about to move next door to them in a few weeks time. Thankfully the booking went ahead or future meetings may have been awkward ;-)

I didn’t have far to go for their engagement session, just a few steps over the fence. Their wedding at Newburgh Priory complete with a horse and carriage will soon be on the blog, but for now, here are the gorgeous couple strutting their stuff next door.

A silly one!

BABY PHOTOGRAPHER YORK | SAM

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Time flies by so fast, it’s hard to believe that I first photographed Sam as a three month old baby a year ago. He’s now walking and into everything, keeping his Mum and Grandma on their toes!  His Mum brought him over for his third and final portrait from his ‘Watch Them Grow’ series on a lovely November day, and he enjoyed exploring my garden.  He was a prefect little model – and the first portrait I’ve had in my own garden since moving back home from Newby Hall.  I’ll be doing more of these, so I think plenty of gardening is on the agenda for this year.  Best get hubby out there with the lawnmower!

Sam grew rather a lot last year:

(Still getting to grips with the blogstomp app – please ignore the msg while I try it out!)
